TMS vs Medication: Which Is Right for You?

TMS List Editorial Team |

Unlike medications, TMS has fewer systemic side effects since it directly targets specific brain regions without circulating through your entire body.

Antidepressant medications work by altering neurotransmitter levels throughout the brain and body. While effective for many, they often cause side effects including weight gain, sexual dysfunction, nausea, insomnia, and emotional blunting. TMS avoids these systemic effects by delivering magnetic pulses precisely to the target brain region.

TMS may be preferable for patients who cannot tolerate medication side effects, have not responded adequately to multiple antidepressants, or want to avoid long-term medication use. However, TMS requires daily clinic visits for several weeks, whereas medications are taken daily at home.
