Does TMS hurt?

Quick Answer

TMS is generally not painful. Most patients describe feeling a tapping or clicking sensation on the scalp during treatment. Some may experience mild discomfort or headache, but this typically subsides after the first few sessions.

Detailed Answer

The vast majority of patients tolerate TMS very well. During treatment, you'll feel a tapping sensation on your scalp where the magnetic coil is positioned. This is caused by rapid muscle contractions in the scalp - not pain from the magnetic field itself.

You'll also hear a clicking sound with each pulse. Earplugs are provided to minimize noise exposure.

**Common Sensations**: - Tapping or pecking feeling on the forehead - Tingling in facial muscles - Mild tension headache (10-20% of patients)

**Managing Discomfort**: If you experience discomfort during initial sessions, your technician can adjust the coil position or reduce intensity slightly. Most patients acclimate within 3-5 sessions, and any headaches typically resolve with over-the-counter pain relievers.

Unlike ECT (electroconvulsive therapy), TMS requires no anesthesia precisely because it's not painful. You remain fully awake and alert throughout the 20-30 minute session.
