BrainsWay publicized an expanding wave of U.S. payer policies that allow trained psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNPs) to order, supervise, and administer TMS therapy. The company pointed to Optum Behavioral Health's policy update, covering roughly 34.8 million commercial lives, as leading the trend.
Beyond Optum, BrainsWay said additional payers adopting similar language include multiple commercial insurers, Medicare Administrative Contractors (First Coast, National Government Services, Novitas), the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and TRICARE West. CEO Hadar Levy framed the shift as removing structural barriers to proven mental health care.
The company argued that widening the set of qualified clinicians who can deliver Deep TMS helps offset psychiatrist shortages, improving patient access and shortening wait times. Deep TMS is FDA-cleared for major depressive disorder, OCD, and smoking addiction.
For clinics, the trend expands staffing flexibility for TMS delivery, particularly in markets with few psychiatrists.
