Optum, UnitedHealthcare, and United Behavioral Health updated their TMS clinical policy to let psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNPs) order, supervise, and administer TMS therapy — authority previously limited to psychiatrists. According to Neuronetics, the update applies to PMHNPs practicing in states with full practice authority, covering 26 states and Washington, D.C.
Neuronetics cites roughly 34.8 million Optum/UHC/UBH commercial covered lives. The policy applies to PMHNPs practicing within their state advanced-practice registered-nurse scope of practice.
The announcement came from Neuronetics, the maker of NeuroStar, on April 13, 2026; the payer's own policy document was not located, so confirm details with Optum before relying on them.
By broadening the pool of clinicians who can deliver TMS, the policy should help clinics serve more patients and open TMS in markets with few psychiatrists.
