An ongoing multicenter randomized trial is testing the Stanford Accelerated Intelligent Neuromodulation Therapy (SAINT) protocol for postpartum depression. Led by Thalia Robakis, MD, PhD, of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, the study is enrolling patients across four sites: Mount Sinai in New York, UMass, UT Austin, and the Medical University of South Carolina.
The trial remains in the enrollment phase with no outcome data yet reported. Robakis argues that SAINT's compressed one-week course is especially suited to new mothers, for whom rapid symptom resolution matters for both infant health and family functioning, and that the nonpharmacological approach appeals to breastfeeding women who wish to avoid medication.
SAINT delivers multiple daily sessions over roughly five days using imaging-guided targeting of each patient's antidepressant network node.
